Tina Hwang is an Associate of Queen City Law. Tina completed her LLB (Hons) degree at the University of Auckland and is a member of the Auckland District Law Society (ADLS) Property Disputes Committee.
After eight years with award winning Boutique law firm, Queen City Law, Tina mainly practises in construction and litigation. Tina started her legal practice by assisting first time homebuyers and holding their hand through the seemingly overbearing processes involved and subsequently helped property developers and contractors. Tina has also been involved with various commercial acquisitions and disputes; construction projects (large and small- including new and recladding) as well as negotiating tenders and construction contracts; and with mediation and litigation. Tina is readily requested to assist in reviewing construction and consultancy agreements on construction projects as well as in resolving construction disputes. This can lead to litigation which she also attends to. Tina has developed expertise in construction issues and has presented papers at a number of New Zealand conferences and seminars on construction law. She contributes regularly to the Builders & Contractors Magazine.
Being client-centric Tina has also taken on numerous employment cases (both employer and employee) and the consequent mediation and settlements. Tina regularly appears in Tribunals and Courts. Tina even has criminal law experience where she successfully defended/mitigated a number of criminal charges for some of our clients and has continued to keep pace with the diverse range of expertise a boutique law firm and its client’s demand and deserve. For example, Tina successfully appealed a criminal sentencing in the Hamilton High Court (which created new case law), successfully opposed a caveat in the Christchurch High Court, successfully appealed a criminal sentencing in the Auckland High Court, and has prevented several dogs from being destroyed in the Auckland and Waitakere District Court.
Born in South Korea, but raised in New Zealand, Tina is completely bilingual. She loves sports including hockey, badminton and soccer and also has a passion for the beach and innovative art. Tina is interested in helping the youth community. She was the President of a charitable organisation promoting the awareness of multicultural identity (Kowiana Association of New Zealand) and was further a committee member of the Korean New Zealand Business Council being mindful of the need to build economic ties between South Korea and New Zealand. Tina also co-organised several children’s project called the “Our Children, Our Community” in Christchurch and Auckland (three times) inviting children from low decile schools or disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in a day of fun and inspiration with a police man, fireman, entertainer, designer and sports person supported by the firm and local businesses. She also regularly presents to church youth groups.
Tina considers communication with clients one of the most fundamental building stones in practicing law and aims to keep her clients informed and aware of the seemingly complicated legal processes involved in legal work. Tina believes her prior experience as a legal executive often means she can attend to legal matters far more efficiently than some other lawyers and this is of significant benefit to clients.
Tina has also been intricately involved in remedial work totalling some NZ$30M on a couple of the first major multiunit leaky building settlements and construction issues associated with these projects. This has necessitated working very closely with Marcus and Tina has, in a very condensed period, developed expertise in terms of construction issues associated with high-rise remedial works. Queen City Law is certain Tina will continue to have a very bright future in the law.
