Melinda completed her Bachelor of Laws degree in China before she moved to NZ in 2003. She completed her Master of Laws degree at Canterbury University and was admitted to the NZ bar in 2013. Melinda speaks fluent English and Mandarin. Having studied law in both New Zealand and China equips her well to deal with the growing contact and business development between the two countries.
Before joining QCL, Melinda spent over seven years at the Inland Revenue Department where she worked in three different positions. Her last role with the Department was Account Manager of Large Enterprises, Investigations and Advice where she account managed a number of corporate entities with annual turnover of more than $100 million. Melinda provided tax advice and technical guidance to these customers across all revenue types and social policies administered by IR. She was, also on several occasions in charge of initiating litigation processes against defaulting taxpayers. Melinda was involved in settlement negotiations, instalment arrangement negotiations, investigations of GST refund claims and shortfall penalty considerations. Melinda worked closely with IRD Investigators, Solicitors, corporate tax managers and tax agents. She received many compliments from taxpayers and their professional teams for her strong work ethic, outstanding service and efficient communication skills.
Melinda is excited about starting her legal career with QCL. She is confident that her IRD work experience plus the valuable guidance offered by Brett Carpenter (Consultant) will soon make QCL tax team the go to lawyers when one needs tax advice. Melinda understands what QCL’s clients are going through no matter whether they’re individuals, small business owners or large corporates. Melinda also has interest in commercial, property, immigration and family law matters.
Melinda is a fan of Yoga and has been practicing for many years. Melinda is also interested in community work and helped to run her local Plunket play group.
